What We Do

Tree Trimming & Pruning, Done Properly

Trimming is the work that keeps a tree from becoming a removal. At The Top Tree Service Corp prunes and trims trees across Suffolk County from Shirley: clearing limbs off roofs and gutters, lifting canopies over driveways and lawns, thinning crowns so wind passes through instead of taking the tree down, and cutting out deadwood before it falls on its own.

What we trim for

  • Clearance. Limbs off the roof, away from the chimney and siding, out of the service wire to the house (PSEG handles the main lines; we handle everything on your side).
  • Deadwood. Dead limbs are the ones that come down in the next nor'easter. We take them out of the whole crown, not just the ones you can see from the deck.
  • Crown thinning and reduction. Open up a dense crown so light reaches the lawn and wind gets through; reduce height or spread on a tree that's outgrown its spot, with proper cuts rather than topping.
  • Canopy raise. Lift the lowest limbs so you can walk, mow and park underneath.
  • Shape and health. Crossing limbs, weak crotches, water sprouts, storm damage cleaned up with correct cuts so the tree heals.

We don't top trees. Topping leaves stubs that rot and regrow weak, fast shoots that break off; a tree that needs to be that much shorter is usually a reduction-or-removal conversation, and we'll have it with you honestly.

When to prune

Most Long Island shade trees are best pruned in late winter when they're dormant and you can see the structure; oaks especially, to avoid oak wilt season. Spring-flowering trees go right after bloom. Dead or hazardous limbs come out any time of year. Storm season prep (thinning and deadwood) is best done in late summer before the fall storms.

How a trimming job goes

Free on-site estimate with a written price. On the day, a climber or bucket truck works the tree limb by limb; everything is roped down over roofs and beds. Brush is chipped on site, wood hauled, lawn raked. Average yard: half a day.

Common Questions

When is the best time to trim trees on Long Island?

Late winter for most shade trees, when they're dormant and the structure is easy to see; oaks especially, to stay clear of oak wilt season. Spring-flowering trees are pruned right after they bloom. Dead or dangerous limbs come out whenever you call.

Can you trim limbs away from my power lines?

We clear the service wire that runs to your house and anything on your side of it. Limbs touching PSEG's main lines on the street are their job; we'll tell you if that's what you're looking at.

Will trimming hurt the tree?

Not when it's done with proper cuts at the right time. We don't top trees; topping is what hurts them. A tree that needs to be much shorter is a reduction-or-removal conversation, and we'll be honest about it.
